	RSVP: EMAIL JEAN by SUNDAY AFTERNOON Please advise Jean no later than Sunday Afternoon if you will be attending the meeting on Monday and if you are eating. If you cannot attend it is important to let Jean know before 4pm that day, as Diane is preparing meals for those who reply and if you are a “no show” it creates a problem for her kitchen staff in the number of meals to prepare.

COLLEEN SKLAR

Colleen Sklar is the Executive Director of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region (WMR) where she works with local leaders to develop innovative integrated regional responses in water protection and management, land use planning, infrastructure investment, economic development and collaborative governance. Most recently Colleen led the development of Plan20-50 – the first regional plan for Manitoba’s Capital Region.

Many of you will remember this dynamic lady who was chair of the Selkirk Library and headed up the campaign to see the new Gaynor Family Regional Library come to fruition.

CLUB MEETING - FEBRUARY 13, 2023

MINUTES OF SELKIRK ROTARY CLUB MEETING

FEBUARY 13, 2023

Meeting opened by President David at 6:00 p.m. with the singing of O Canada, followed by Grace (by Ron Thiede) and Land Acknowledgement.

Dinner was served.

15 people in attendance :

David Thorne, Jim Pelletier, Scott Thorne, Murray Melvin, David Moore, Al Curtis, Ron Knight, Elaine Elliott, Sharon Moolchan, Lesli Malegus, Brian Surridge, Trish Goosen, Marcia Bilkoski, Jean Oliver, Ron Thiede

PROGRAM was the Life and Times of three new members Scott Thorne, Jim Pelletier and Murray Melvin.

BUSINESS

Tickets have been distributed to all present for the Viva la Vino draw. A friend of Ron Thiede has donated two handmade wine racks, They need to be stained .If anyone knows of a person who could stain them, please let Ron Thiede or David Thorne know. One will be used for the Viva draw this year and the other saved for next year.

TREASURER REPORT

A donation was received from Honorary Rotarian Doug Anderson towards a Shelterbox for Syria/Turkey relief. One has been donated by the club, and if we are able to raise $1200 from other donations, a second one will be sent. Donations to be sent to Treasurer and a tax receipt will be issued.

President David gave special acknowledgement to Rotarian Hobie Searles for his article on Peace in the Spoke. He reminded us that this is what we as Rotarians are all about.

President David then shared some information about a second peace pole being donated to the City of Selkirk. He will draft a letter to Mayor and each Councillor with information about a Peace Pole, the languages and that we would expect that the city would cover the cost of setting the pole into a proper site. Our target date would be Peace Day in September. It was then brought to the attention of the club that a pole could be erected in St. Andrews as well and everyone agreed. A motion was made by Rotarian Elaine, seconded by Rotarian Scott that President David contact Mayor and Councillors regarding a Peace Pole in City of Selkirk. Carried

At next meeting President David has planned some advertising that will be done for Viva La Vino.

Program for next meeting is Colleen Sklar of Winnipeg Metro Region.

Meeting adjourned at 7:15pm.

INFORMATION: EACH MEETING'S PROCESS

We continue to meet at Selkirk Golf & Country Club on the 2^nd and 4^th Mondays of each month.

When you arrive there will be a designated table set up with name badges, the “money tray” and a member list. Please remember to wear your badge and then leave it on the table at the conclusion of the meeting. On the membership list, please check off your name and your method of payment for your meal ($20.00 for a meal, $5.00 for coffee and dessert).

Fellowship begins around 5:30 pm. And the meeting formally begins at 6 P.M. Traditionally we open each meeting with the signing of O Canada, followed by Grace and the Land Acknowledgement. If there are any guests, they would be introduced at that time. Dinner is then served.

Following dinner, one of the members will introduce the guest speaker. If anyone ever has any suggestions for a speaker, please let David or Jean know...any suggestions are welcome.

A Rotarian is asked in advance to thank the speaker.

Any business for discussion or for club information is then done.

This will conclude the meeting.

Please make every effort to let Jean know by Sunday at the latest as to your attendance at the meetings and if you are eating. Out of courtesy it is appreciated if we let Diane know the number of tables and dinners to prepare. Try not to sit at the same table each week but move around and meet the new members and ones you haven’t seen for a while.

We are soon to be going over committee structures and looking for volunteers. Getting involved in the Executive or on any committee is a great way to understand Rotary , but as in any organization getting involved is what keeps you interested.

Some of our members have 40 plus years in the club and have been involved in every aspect of the club... their interest continues to be a support to us.

The Spoke 1992-93 Excerpts

I found an old copy of The Spoke from 1992-93 and Gayle Halliwell was president and Bill Bodman was the incoming president. Bill encouraged everyone to attend the District Conference. The theme for that conference was “Bring A Friend” which fits in very well with this month's program of recruiting new members for our club...(This ties in with President David’s desire to increase membership.)

It was also noted that we had Club Representatives for: Handibus; Youth for Christ; Selkirk Scouts, Selkirk Food Bank, Rec Foundation and Arc Industries. Rotarians Al Curtis and Doug Anderson were co chairs of the Ice fishing Derby: Brian Surridge and Fraser Stewart were chairs of Environment Protection, Dave Moore was Chair of Fellowship Activities. It was a busy club and everyone seemed to take an active role in committees!!!
