Colleen Sklar, Executive Director of Winnipeg Metro Region and how it relates to the City of Selkirk. Many of you will remember this dynamic lady who was chair of the Selkirk Library and headed up the campaign to see the new Gaynor Family Regional Library come to fruition.
6:00 p.m. Welcome by President David, which included O Canada, Rotary Grace, and the Land Acknowledgement.
Guests: Rebecca Allan from Peguis Community Supports and Services
Program: Rebecca Allan spoke about Huddle. Huddle is a safe space for all youth ages 12-29 offering free, trauma-informed, and culturally safe health services in a youth-friendly atmosphere (a one-stop shop). It was designed by youth, for youth, in a “what do you need approach,” with mental health services as a huge contributing factor.
President David presented a $350 cheque to the Huddle program from the Christmas auction.
Club Updates:
Wine and Roses –Lesli has applied for a lottery license. First prize: 2 lobster tickets and 2 bottle of wine. 2nd prize: $170 worth of wine and 3rd prize: $100 gift card from MLCC. The plan is to have the draw 7:00 p.m. on March 27th, at our club meeting. If every Rotarian sold one book, we would sell out. Only 500 tickets printed. Tickets will be $10 each.
Lobsterfest - Following recommendations from the Lobsterfest committee, the Executive board has decided to host this year’s Lobsterfest back at the Selkirk Rec Centre which has already been booked for Sat. May 27th. It is the 30th anniversary of this event for the club. Planning will commence at the March 13 meeting as a whole group. Cracking of lobsters will take place.

Attendance for today’s meeting is 56%.
Shared correspondence regarding Shelterbox request for Ukraine. A donation of $1200.00 can ensure the support of a family on their journey of self-recovery and rebuild.
Treasurer’s Report:
Budget was distributed to all members prior to this meeting and a hard copy provided at the meeting.

Motion made by Elaine, Seconded by Lee, to accept the 2022/2023 Budget as presented. Motion carried.
Motion made by Ron T. Seconded by Murray, to donate $1200.00 (one kit) to ShelterBox Canada to support the work in Ukraine from club funds. Motion carried.
Suggested to share information with Rotarians and honorary Rotarians to see if they wanted to contribute towards a second Shelterbox to Ukraine.

To January 27, 2023, the Selkirk Rotary club has packed 10,907 bags of food for kids in Lord Selkirk School Division. The first bags were delivered November 3, 2019 ( that day we prepared 49 bags and 4 people did it in 45 minutes. ) Today we did 170 bags, 6 people in 1 hour and 10 minutes) which were then picked up by Hobie and delivered to 6 schools in LSSD.
In those numbers there were about 6 snow days , Christmas holidays, spring break...that is a lot of bags folks!!
We continue to meet at Selkirk Golf & Country Club on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
When you arrive there will be a designated table set up with name badges, the “money tray” and a member list. Please remember to wear your badge and then leave it on the table at the conclusion of the meeting. On the membership list, please check off your name and your method of payment for your meal ($20.00 for a meal, $5.00 for coffee and dessert).
Fellowship begins around 5:30 pm. And the meeting formally begins at 6 P.M. Traditionally we open each meeting with the signing of O Canada, followed by Grace and the Land Acknowledgement. If there are any guests, they would be introduced at that time. Dinner is then served.
Following dinner, one of the members will introduce the guest speaker. If anyone ever has any suggestions for a speaker, please let David or Jean know...any suggestions are welcome.
A Rotarian is asked in advance to thank the speaker.
Any business for discussion or for club information is then done.
This will conclude the meeting.
Please make every effort to let Jean know by Sunday at the latest as to your attendance at the meetings and if you are eating. Out of courtesy it is appreciated if we let Diane know the number of tables and dinners to prepare. Try not to sit at the same table each week but move around and meet the new members and ones you haven’t seen for a while.
We are soon to be going over committee structures and looking for volunteers. Getting involved in the Executive or on any committee is a great way to understand Rotary , but as in any organization getting involved is what keeps you interested.
Some of our members have 40 plus years in the club and have been involved in every aspect of the club... their interest continues to be a support to us.

MY WORDS FOR PEACE COLUMN - POSSIBILITY OF PEACE

INTRODUCTION: WHY I BEGAN THIS COLUMN
Today, I begin sharing my ideas about a lifelong topic that has motivated much of what I have explored in my life, lasting world peace. I feel compelled to start openly sharing these ideas with deep hope that somehow they may contribute to, if not lasting world peace, at least some peace for someone somewhere.
I've struggled with coming up with a fitting name for this column. It is to tell the reader that these are just my words about peace. Nothing more. There are merely my best available words to attempt to convey what I think may be helpful to someone else. They are born out of my own life experiences and life lessons as well as continual research to both learn and test new ideas. So, each post I'll share an aspect of my current perspective on what is helpful. Hence, the name "My Words for Peace Column".
POSSIBILITY: THERE MUST BE SOME BELIEF IN THE POSSIBILITY OF PEACE
Each issue I will share a few words about an idea that I believe may be helpful. We must first believe in the possibility of peace.
We must believe peace is possible to effectively get there or we won't really work towards it. We'll work to support what we believe and if it isn't peace it will be something we believe may protect ourselves from harm like keeping our distance or preparing to fight back. And globally there must be enough belief that world peace is possible to spread the peace to every corner of the world. But peace pauses between the wars is not good enough. The world needs lasting peace. A peace that is not interrupted by eventual war. As peace time stretches to lifetimes of peace we will have generations that have experienced lasting peace.
I now truly believe lasting world peace is more that a possibility. I believe amongst all the turmoil and angst in our world today that world peace is wanted so much that we will find a way to let it happen. I truly believe it is coming. I believe that not only world peace is possible, I also believe in lasting peace. The path may be rocky and beget with storms, but it is coming.
My goal is to make my words as helpful as possible to as many people as possible. Would you help me do that? I invite everyone to write to me and provide their thoughts. Support or challenge, It all helps. Afterall, we are in this together.
February is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention month. It inspired me to start this column now.
