Schedule for the week of guests arriving and our club involvement in the Pilot program of Y2Y Truth , Reconciliation and Engagement Program
Selkirk Rotary will be the local hosts for 50 students, ages 15 to 18, from across Canada and 20 chaperones. There will also be guests brought and paid for by David Newman namely Brenda Newman, Diane Redsky, Rachel Sansragret, Holly Courchene and DG Fred Wright ( TBC by Fred). for Monday and Wednesday nights. The following schedule could be changed at the last minute for timing, but events are:
SATURDAY MARCH 25 Students arrive in Winnipeg and check in Hampton Inn Hotel at 730 Berry St. Winnipeg. After lunch early arrivals may make quick visit to meet with 100 Indigenous youth at the CMHR led by Michael Champagne. At 4 PM bus will take all arrived students and chaperones to Win Gardner Centre at 363 McGregor ( old YMCA). At 5:30 PM second bus will transport second load there. Michael Redhead Champagne will lead orientation and ice-breaking activities and dinner there until 8 PM. Late arrivals will check in and eat at hotel. Buses return to hotel and unite all arrivals at hotel at 8:30 PM. Lights out 11 PM. Gathering area in hotel is lobby breakfast area. Snacks and beverages will be available there.
SUNDAY MARCH 26 Students spend the day with chaperones and Indigenous Tour Guides on a unique D5550 custom created urban Indigenous tour of Winnipeg on two buses starting at 9 AM and visiting urban Indigenous locations around the city and end up at Win Gardner Centre for activities and dinner. One tour bus led by Bill Shead of Selkirk (Thanks to Fraser Stewart for taking Bill into the city to start the tour in the morning). Second tour bus guide is Rachel Sansragret who is CEO of Indigenous Executive Circle a Council of community leaders heading Indigenous NGOs in Winnipeg. Buses with passengers and their luggage will arrive at Win Gardner Centre at 4 PM for all the arrivals to once again be facilitated in activities by Michael Redhead Champagne at Win Gardner Centre. Then at 7:15 PM the buses leave to deliver students and chaperones to Selkirk at the CANALTA INN AT 8:00 p.m. where they will be welcomed by President DAVID THORNE, MAYOR LARRY JOHANNSON, ELDER DR. RUTH CHHRISTIE . DR. AL LAGIMODIERE AND LOCAL DRUMMING GROUP. ALL SELKIRK ROTARIANS AND SPOUSES ARE INVITED TO THIS BRIEF WELCOME .
MONDAY MARCH 27 Students and chaperones leave the Canalta for Turtle Lodge in Sagkeeng where they will spend the day, The two buses will arrive at SELKIRK GOLF COURSE at 5:30 to join our club at our meeting. WE ASK THAT CLUB MEMBERS ARRIVE AT 5 PM TO SIGN IN, PAY FOR YOUR MEAL AND AVOID THE CROWD AT 5;30 when the 70 folks arrive. The guest speaker will be local singer/songwriter/Musician and member of the band Tim and The Glory Boys, Brenton Thorvaldson. This is oue opportunity to show what a GREAT CLUB WE ARE. YOU MUST ADVISE JEAN BY THURSDAY OF YOUR ATTENDANCE AS THERE WILL BE NO WALK IN DUE TO THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ATTENDING WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 100.
TUESDAY MARCH 28 back to Sagkeeng for the day returning to Canalta for supper AT 5PM. CATERED BY BOSTON PIZZA. . POINT PERSONS FOR THE EVENING are LESLI MALEGUS (204 485 1209) AND DAVID THORNE(1 431 777 6807). If you can help them out let them know.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 29 Back to Sagkeeng and return to KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (CORNER OF Eveline & McLean) for supper at 5pn catered by Boston Pizza, POINT PERSON FOR THE SUPPER IS SHARON MOOLCHAN (204 482 3041) WITH Lesli Malegus, Ruth Konzelman, and Lena Kublick. Once everyone has their food, Bill Shead will give a video presentation of local historic sights.
THURSDAY MARCH 30 Back to Sagkeeng and returning to Selkirk Friendship Centre for 5pm supper Catered by Diane Thomas of Selkirk Golf Course. Kids will be treated to Paint Night where they will all create their own Indigenous painting. POINT PERSON IS MICHELE POLINUK (204 485 0457),Ron Thiede and Lee Hanson.
FRIDAY MARCH 31 Kids pack up and head to Winnipeg early morning for full day of learning activities at Canadian Museum for Human organized by CMHR and National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Dinner from 5 to 7 PM at Old Spaghetti Factory at Forks.. Buses to hotel leave at 7 PM for . Hampton hotel for final night.
SATURDAY APRIL 1 TRAVEL HOME DAY AND RETURN with greater knowledge and understanding of reconciliation, relationships with new friends for life, motivation to advance and share what they learned and an action plan to fo so.
And the exciting news is we now have a local LSSD student, Cree Campbell participating in the entire program.
Meeting of APRIL 10. With our own Rotarian Scott Thorne. WHO IS A STUDENT OF Entomology at the U of M. Members will recall at the meeting when Scott gave us his “Who Am I” bio, he indicated that the next species to decimate our tree population will be the Gypsy Moth. Come and hear Scott speak of this invasive species and what can we do to protect our trees. Please advise President David of your attendance by Sunday at noon.,
Meeting of April 24 speaker will be Rotarian Michele, assisted by Rotarian Gary on their trip to the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon. Change of location for the meeting will be advised as Golf Course not available that evening.
