    We met online with Zoom.

Call to Order: 6:06 p.m. by Past President Jean Oliver

Doug Chorney, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grains Commission was our guest speaker for March 14.
Doug is a well-known farmer in East Selkirk, with extensive family roots in farming, particularly potatoes and market gardening. He has served on several boards in the agriculture sector. Doug also served as a director on the Selkirk and District Community Foundation. He was appointed Chief Commissioner in December 2020. Doug shared some of the history of the Canadian Grain Commission, his role, as well as the process of testing, quality assessments and grading of grain. Rotarians had several questions for Doug, including how the situation in Ukraine will affect the industry.

    Past President Report:  Jean Oliver
All hands are needed for the Lobster on the Run – 10 weeks from now. The club members present agreed with President David’s proposal to hold our April 11th meeting in person instead of Zoom to allow the opportunity to distribute tickets for Lobster on the Run. April 25th will also be in person to allow planning for Lobster on the Run for the club.

HIP (HONOURING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES) COMMITTEE REPORT

I attended a Zoom meeting on April 6 with the following items discussed:
    • Under the leadership of Strini Reddy and working with “Share the Magic” and Indigo books, over 9000 books were delivered to the libraries/schools in Shammatawa, Lac Brochet, Wasagaming, to name a few Northern communities.
    • Jim Bear shared the news that a series of stamps will be issued next month honouring Sergeant Tommy Prince.  He was able to show us the final proofs of the stamps and they will be outstanding!  There will be a launch of the stamps in Manitoba but he was not at liberty to say where.  Naturally the government wanted to have the launch in Ottawa, but thanks to Jim and his volunteers it will be held in Manitoba.
    • I shared the news of the last shipment of clothes and school supplies went up to The Pas Opaskwayak First Nations and that our Peace Pole was on order and two of the languages on it are Cree and Ojibway.
