DOUG CHORNEY
Chief Commissioner of the
Canadian Grains Commission
 
Our Guest Speaker on March 14 is local farmer, Doug Chorney.  Doug has served on the Keystone Agriculture Board, and the Canadian Grains Commission for many years. In 2017 he was appointed Assistant Grain Commissioner and in December 2020 was appointed Chief Commissioner. 

In 1912 under the Conservative Government the Board of Grain Commission for Canada was created by Robert Borden. It was renamed Canadian Grain Commission in 1971.  It has a long history of Canadian farms and Doug will be able to share some of that history as well as his role as Chief Commissioner.

• Second Monday of the month – via Zoom
• Fourth Monday of the month – In person at the Selkirk Golf Course
 
Zoom invitations are emailed in advance of each Zoom meeting.

    There are still tickets available to hear the Founder of the Joy Smith Foundation, speak at our Soup and Sandwich Luncheon on March 21.  
     
    This is sure to be a special event.  Many community members from different organizations are attending.  Partners are most welcome. Rotarians, please support this event! 
     
    EXCERPTS FROM OUR LAST MEETING
     
    We met in person on February 28, 2022, at the Selkirk Golf and Country Club. 
     
    Gordon Janzen, our guest speaker for February 28, was the Regional Representative (MB and NW Ontario) for the Canadian Food Grains Bank.  Their mission is to work together to end global hunger. Implemented by 15 agencies. The Canadian Food Grains Bank has the following programs: Emergency food assistance in time of crisis, long term response to improve household food security, engaging Canadians and governments toward meaningful change.
     
    Sergeant-at-Arms Rhonda, went around and happy and positive dollars were shared by all. So many were grateful to be back in person, improved temperatures, and health updates going in the right direction. Rhonda also shared a funny email story with the message to remember to be careful who the address is going to! The Peace Pole is ordered! 
     
    Past President Jean, shared some updates:  
    • NOW (Nutrition On Weekends) program requests are now at 152 bags per week.
    • Tickets for March 21, 2022, Rotary Luncheon with speaker is $20.00 and available now. 
     
    President David's report included some announcements: : 
    • Meal RSVPs –  We will continue to ask Rotarians to inform Jean of their planned attendance and meal by Wednesday before each in-person meeting to help determine numbers of meals to order.
    • Upcoming meetings – March 14 (Executive), March 21 (Lunch meeting at Golf Course advance $20 ticket required).
