Guest Speaker: Sexual Exploitation in Selkirk by Tammy Thompson – Program Manager for START (Selkirk Team for At Risk Teens) and Adults
The START program is a multi-agency collaboration (RCMP, Probation, School, Addictions Services, Mental Health, Public Heath, Child and Family Services), supporting and focusing on the clients and families struggling the most in our community.
Also co-chairing the ISEE Committee, (Interlake Sexual Exploitation Educators), Tammy shared information and real stories/situations regarding child sexual exploitation, child abuse. Youth exchange sex for transportation, place to stay, substances, acceptance (2005); Cyberbullying (2008), Sexting (2011), and Sextortion (2011). The pandemic created an increase of 88% in reports. The online predators exist everywhere, and the victims are everywhere, including our region. The committee focuses on the education piece for our community.
How to prevent? : Understand the risks, educate, explain that adults should never text children in a sexual way, ask questions and listen without fear of being punished, discuss healthy relationships, talk about consent, report.
Just remember consent as it relates to “a cup of tea” (video: Tea and Consent).
