Rotary Club of Selkirk – Meeting Minutes October 24, 2022
Today is World Polio Day
6:00 p.m. Welcome by Acting President Jean and included O Canada, Rotary Grace, with Marcia sharing a Land Acknowledgement
Introduction of Guests by table Rotarians. One honorary Rotarian and two prospective members were in attendance.
Program:
Dr. Gordon Goldsborough from Department of Biological Sciences, University of Manitoba, as chairman of the Netley Marsh Renewal along with Steve Strang, spoke on the largest freshwater coastal wetland in North America and the project to restore Netley-Libau Marsh.

For the health of our lake, we need to be proactive rather than reactive to save the lake. It’s our responsibility to give care to our waters and to talk to people to improve awareness.
Dr. Gordon did a lot of work with the Delta Marsh (the second largest in North America) on the south end of Lake Manitoba. It took 12-15 years to restore the ecosystem at the Delta Marsh, back to the way it used to be.
The Netley-Libau Marsh is about 22,000 hectares in area. Vast areas of vegetation have diminished. We need diversity. It’s more water now and not a functional marsh. A pilot restoration project for this area, and the benefits were shared with Rotarians. There are several project partners and funding partners. Money isn’t the limiting factor, it’s that the project is being held to a very high standard for environmental conditions.
How can we help? Be a partner by using your voice. Ask our elected representatives at municipal, provincial and federal levels to support restoration of Netley-Libau Marsh. Phase two can only happen with the help of the governments. For more information please visit: www.savenetleymarsh.com

NOW – 144 bags have been the consistent number for the past 3 weeks. Most of the volunteers are non-Rotarians. Hobie delivers every week. If you end up with extra Halloween candy, bring to Michele who will take to the NOW program.
Winter Clothing for up north, project of HIP – Sorting Packing boxes this Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at 1:00 p.m. and Friday at 1:00 p.m. Any time you can volunteer would be appreciated. All clothes will be going into fly-in communities: St. Theresa Point.,Tadoule Lake, Shammatawa, Red Sucker Lake and Split Lake.

Many thanks go out to the students/staff of LSSD, churches, Rotarians and community for supporting HIP (Honoring Indigenous Peoples) collecting winter wear to be sent to the 5 Northern Fly In Reserves. Two half-ton trucks took the boxes into Winnipeg for shipment. Darlene Swiderski, Judy Maryniuk, Don & Doris Gowryluk, and Dorothy Gely were incredible support to Rotarians Trish, Ruth, Lesli, and Michele for sorting and packing up boxes.

Hi Jean,
I went over this morning to get the final tasks done to get the winter clothing ready for shipping to our partner communities. I was greeted by the wonderful collection of boxes from LSSD and RC Selkirk all neatly packed and labelled.
I cannot thank all of you enough for your kindness and generous efforts. Your club is one of the strongest supporters of our Honoring Indigenous Peoples efforts and you are making it possible for Rotarians to provide real service in a spirit of generosity and respect. I must also acknowledge your club’s very generous donation of books which will help us greatly in our efforts to provide books to all our partner communities. Chris Melnick of Share the Magic is in the process of preparing large shipments which will be transported to our partner communities over the winter roads.
Please pass on our very sincere appreciation to all of fellow Rotarians as well as to the leadership and schools of Lord
Selkirk School Division.
Let us continue to work together to support our northern indigenous partner communities in a true spirit of reconciliation.
