OCTOBER 24 – We have two well- known speakers in Steve Strang and Dr. Gordon Goldsborough who will be speaking on the Netley Marsh Renewal. A topic near and dear to residents of our area. Our club is most fortunate to have these two gentlemen bring us an update on the Netley Marsh Renewal.

Steve, a former Reeve of R.M. of St. Clements, and Dr. Goldsborough who is the Chair of the Committee will no doubt have a very important message to deliver to the club.

MEETING 1 of 3 - SEPTEMBER 12

Rotary Club of Selkirk – Meeting Minutes September 12, 2022

Call to Order: 6:02 p.m. by President David Thorne

Rotary Grace

Acknowledgement of Treaty Land Territory

Program: Discussion and potential motions regarding club and membership. Potluck supper on David Thorne’s deck.

Attendance: 48%. An additional five Rotarians shared their votes for the suggested motions sent out prior to the meeting. For the purposes of the motions, the % voted reflects 68% of the membership.

Potluck supper was superb! Thanks for the contributions from everyone and special thanks to smoke-master Ron Thiede.

President’s Report: The meeting centered on the topics and proposed motions made per the email sent to all Rotarians dated September 5, 2022 to all active Rotarian members.

Each motion was discussed, questions asked, and the opinions submitted for those who couldn’t be there, shared.

1. Motion made by Ruth, Seconded by Jean, to cap annual membership fees at $200 for the next three years, 2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25.

Carried unanimously

2. Motion made by Ron T., Seconded by Trish, to implement a $10 credit for every regular bi-monthly meeting that members attend, up to $200.

Carried unanimously

3. Motion made by Lesli, seconded by Al, to have a one-time reduction of membership fees to new members, to be capped at $100.

Carried unanimously

4. Motion made by Jean, seconded by Brian, to reduce the meal cost to $20 and re-evaluated as necessary if charges increase.

Carried unanimously

5. Motion made by Trish, seconded by Marcia, to eliminate mandatory fines.

Carried unanimously

6. Motion made by Ron T, seconded by Al, to pause formal club meetings in summer from July 1 to second Monday meeting date in August.

Carried unanimously

Report from Director Jean:

NOW is starting this week and more volunteers are required, including drivers.

A report on HIP was emailed to all members by Jean on September 12th. There is a specific request in the email for clothing donations.

Meetings and speakers were discussed.

Report from Ruth:

Ruth and Sharon have been working hard on the upcoming book sale. More Rotarians are required for the shifts. There are other volunteers, but Rotarians are needed for the cash handling.

Signage will be placed out and retrieved by Hobie during the sale.

Ruth indicated to Trish that the club would like to extend the opportunity for grades 4-6 elementary teachers to by invited to pick up a bag of books for their classrooms.

A 200-amp commercial heater is still required.

With parting words of thanks, President David also indicated to the group to think about possible projects for a common goal for the entire club.

MEETING 2 of 3 - SEPTEMBER 26

Rotary Club of Selkirk – Meeting Minutes September 26, 2022

6:00 p.m. Welcome by President David and included O Canada, Rotary Grace, Land Acknowledgement

Introduction of Guests by table Rotarians

Program: RYLA Junior Camp Student, Corey Marsh, shared his experience from this past August. Corey is currently in Grade 10. He enjoyed the team building activities and has built many new friendships through this Rotary sponsored opportunity. Human Right Issues, Leadership, and Environmental Issues were discussed through the camp stay.

Program: Murray Melvin, proposed new member, was inducted, and welcomed into the club.

Program: Guest Speaker Barry Briscoe, a beekeeper. He moved to Selkirk two years ago to be closer to family. He got started as a beekeeper just after retirement and has been a beekeeper for ten years. He keeps his bees in his backyard as well as Pine Ridge Golf Course. His first bees came from Chile. He shared a display of his beehive, the components inside, and why it’s structured the way it is. Did you know that a queen bee could cost a beekeeper $50?!? Those in attendance all received a jar of honey!!

Updates:

1. Book sale – Lots of books still to sell. We need more people to sort the books. Sale has been tremendous! Great venue. First week $5300. We have a lot of volunteers that have helped Rotarian volunteers.

2. N.O.W. – 146 bags done last week. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jean or Sharon. It’s a time commitment of just over an hour on Friday mornings. Thanks to Hobie for the deliveries.

3. Winter outerwear for up north – Churches and schools were invited to collect and bring items to Knox Presbyterian on a future date. Rotarians are invited to collect winter clothing (outerwear) for children, youth, and adults. This is a project of HIP (honouring Indigenous peoples).

4. Next great idea – What should our next big project to be? We need to be a team? Where do we want our fundraised money to go? Think of possibilities. Nov. 28th we will discuss further.

5. Garden – Thanks to Matt and Red Bomb for the ground and water access to host the garden. Thanks to the Rotarians who devoted time and talents to cultivate and produce many vegetables for the Soup Kitchen and Food Bank. Thanks to Jean and David who spearheaded and ensured the work was getting done! 510 pounds to date!

6. Secretaries Report:

• All attendance is tracked in Club Runner for all 22 regular meetings of the Club during this year.

• We are now with the addition of Murray today, at 25 members.

• Khartum Shriners – donation request approved of $100.

• No other correspondence.

• Attendance for today’s meeting is 63%.

7. Treasurer’s Report:

• Financial Statements were emailed to members for 21/22. Email Lesli if you have any questions.

• Lesli is working on a draft budget. Send requests for budget to Lesli.

• Ten members have paid. If you haven’t paid your dues, please submit as soon as possible.

Upcoming Dates:

October Rotary Meetings: Oct. 3 and Oct. 24.

October 3- Work Party at the Agriculture Building Selkirk Park (5:30)

October 24- Steve Strang- Netley Marsh Renewal

MEETING 3 of 3 - OCTOBER 3

Rotary Club of Selkirk – Meeting Minutes October 3, 2022

Program: Box the books, tape and load onto pallets, fold tables, fold boxes, sweep the floor, eat pizza.

When most Rotarians arrived, the books were almost all boxed! Thanks to the volunteers and students that got this done during the day!

After pizza arrived, the group ate outside on a beautiful October evening.

President David thanked all those involved with the book sale, which was a huge success, in a location that proved to work well. Positive comments were received from those who attended the sale. Social Media provided good advertising.

Motion made by Lesli, Seconded by Marcia to donate $500 to St. Andrews St. Clements Agricultural Society. Approved

Attendance: 72%, included 18 active Rotarians, 1 Honorary Rotarian and 1 prospective member

ROTARY GARDEN

602 pounds of fresh vegetables were donated this year!

Finished up with the Rotary/Red Bomb Fireworks garden last night. Harvested 92 lbs of potatoes! They were donated to the Selkirk Food Bank. That brings our total donations of fresh vegetables this year to 602 lbs!!
