John is married with two teenage children. His wife Elsie is a nurse practitioner with a Phd in nursing currently employed by the University of Manitoba. Elsie also maintains her clinical practice with the IERHA and contract virtual care in Manitoba and Ontario

John joined the RCMP in 1990 after completing a Bachelor of Science degree at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and has been stationed throughout Manitoba. In 2008 he was commissioned to the rank of Inspector and transferred to London Ontario. John returned to Manitoba in 2011 to Thompson, to Selkirk in 2014 and promoted to Superintendent in 2015. He retired from the RCMP in 2018, taking the job of Director of Protective Services with the City of Selkirk where he worked until February 2020. John returned to the RCMP as the Officer in Charge of Selkirk Detachment, where he continued with his passion of detachment and community policing.

John is an avid fisherman, hunter and most outdoor sports. His family has been involved in hockey, ringette, swimming, cadets and many other activities over the years. He enjoys endurance sports, actively competing in triathlons in Manitoba during the summer and completed Ironman Wisconsin in September of 2019.
