Zoom Video Meetings: An Introduction

On April 27th, 2020 Selkirk Rotary will have our online meeting.

Basically, we're going to do a video conference call over the Internet using the Zoom video meeting app.

Requirements

  • A computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with:
    • Speaker so you hear the meeting.
    • Screen so you can see anything being shared on the screen.  People can share their desktop, play videos, or recordings, as well as show themselves when talking on camera.
    • Webcam (optional).  You can participate in the meeting without a webcam.
    • Keyboard to send messages to the Host, specific attendee, or everyone.  This is called the Chat feature.
    • Zoom software (free).
    • Internet.

Birds Eye View of a Zoom Meeting

  • The Host schedules a meeting and then sends out invitations to all the other attendees.  Your invitation was sent on April 22 in email "Rotary | Announcement | Zoom Online social meeting Monday April 27, 2020".
  • You receive your invitation and click on the link inside.
    • You don't need to create a Zoom account to join a meeting. Only the Host needs an Zoom account to be able to create meetings and invitations.  So, you don't need to ever have your own Zoom account to join a meeting.
  • Three things could happen when you click on the meeting link:
  1. Wait for Host to Join: You will see a Waiting for Host message if your at the meeting before the Host.
  2. Wait in the Waiting Room:  Enter the name you want to use in the meeting.  Next, you will be put into the Waiting Room and the Host will be advised your waiting there.
  3. Install the Zoom software: Zoom software will automatically be installed if you don't have it yet.  Then, either choice 1 or choice 2 will happen next.
  • Mic and video get turned off: Host let's you in with your camera and microphone off, so you can turn them on when you are ready.  A box will display the name you entered earlier.
  • You control the your microphone and video during the call.  Turning them on and off when desired.  You will always be able to hear.  It is a good practice to turn off the microphone when your not talking to prevent accidental noise during the call.
  • Testing your mic and video: You can test your microphone before or during the call.
  • Virtual Backgrounds: You can customize your video with virtual backgrounds that can be a photo or movie running behind you.  This is a fun way to replace what is in the background.

A few YouTube videos choosen to provide an opportunity to become more familiar with your equipment choices and the Zoom video conferencing interface.

President Sharon's Announcements for April 27, 2020
Greetings:

I hope everyone has weathered the last 30+ days of isolation and perhaps found some benefits to the slower pace of our lives during this time. I also hope that all of our families and friends have survived this pandemic in good health.

It is very hard to believe that our last face to face meeting was on March 9 when we had an enjoyable and informative tour of the new Selkirk Fire Station and a supper together. Since then the Board has met once on Zoom. (Minutes of that April 6 meeting have been included in this bulletin.) The following motion was emailed to all of the members and was fully supported by all who responded.

MOTION: by Elaine Elliott and seconded by Jean Oliver, THAT THE ROTARY CLUB OF SELKIRK DONATE $2500.00 TO THE SELKIRK FOOD BANK. PASSED

Thank you to all of the members for replying and voting to approve this action.

We also received a $500.00 COVID-19 grant from the district which increased our Food Bank donation to $3000.00.

During isolation many events and programs have been cancelled or the format has been changed.

  1. The weekend District Conference, which was to be held in Kenora from May 21 to 24 has been changed to an online format.

  2. Youth programs have been cancelled. (Ryla, the International Canoe Camp in Sioux Lookout, Long and Short Term Exchange Programs, Adventures in Human Rights, MUNA , Adventures in Technology and the Careers Symposium)

  3. Our Rotary Club Lobsterfest was also cancelled for this year.

Rotarian Ruth has been hard at work on our financial statements and will be sending them out before our April 27, 2020 online Zoom meeting.

GREAT NEWS:

Rotarian Jean applied for a Community Foundation Grant for the NOW program and we received notification this week that we will be receiving a $10 000.00. This will jumpstart the NOW project as soon as classes resume in the school division.

Lastly, the Board members used Zoom for their April 16 meeting and decided to try using Zoom for a club meeting on Monday, April 27. The meeting will run from 6:00 until 7:00.

Please read the information Hobie has written about Zoom and feel free to contact him with your questions or concerns.

Look at this as an online get together, informal experiment where we can catch up, try and iron out problems and get everyone who is participating online. Think of it as a Fireside or Happy Hour. We do not know when the restrictions will change concerning the size of gatherings. Therefore, it is possible that we will need to be able to meet online in order to continue conducting Rotary business.

I think we are all anxious to move on to a new reality and I hope that what we have experienced will inform us about what is really important in our lives and re-energize our club’s commitment to making a difference.

Meeting Highlights (March 9, 2020)

March 9 Field Trip and Meeting

President Sharon Moolchan and Michele Polinuk presenting a cheque to assist with a purchase of the new mascot

It is always enjoyable and interesting to go on a field trip. March 9 was no exception as a good representation of our club members met at the Selkirk Fire Station to have a tour of the new facilities. There were enough firemen present to have a guide for about every 4 club members.

The firemen were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and very appreciative of all of the support they have from community organizations and the City of Selkirk.

We were introduced to all of the firetrucks and their different capabilities and uses. We learned that they can deploy very quickly due to their gearing up at the fire rather than in the firehall.

Kathryn Kunkel having fun!

The new facility is much larger than it looks from the outside and is much more functional than their old building. There are areas for all of the trucks and the firemen’s gear as well as tools required to do the job. They also have a Kodiak for water rescues along with water suits.

Overall it was a tremendous tour and it ended with picture taking and the presentation of a cheque to assist them in purchasing a new Sparky mascot suit that is important to their school education program.

After the trip we went to the Selkirk Golf Course for supper and an opportunity to discuss our next club project. Members discussed their ideas in small groups. The ideas were recorded and are being investigated the Executive.

Some pretty happy faces after the tour of the new Selkirk Firehall
Rotary District 5550 Webinar (with registration and agenda links)
Good evening Rotarians
Just an update on the Rotary District Conference that the Kenora Club is hosting.

We have made changes to the way we will host the conference. The Conference will now be brought to you electronically on your computer and will be cut down to only one day...Saturday, May 23.While this will not be as much fun as visiting and socializing with us here in Kenora it will still be a great conference. These are changing times, so we too have to change and adapt.

Everyone who has previously registered has had their credit card charges reversed. Please watch for this on  your next statement.
We need everyone to re register for this electronic conference. Rotarians that prepaid $20 at  last year's conference will be sent a code to reduce their cost by $20 when they  register.
Cost -$50 per person
Students- no charge

If you are hesitant about an electronic conference  DO NOT WORRY. Once we get close to the date a special link will be sent to you that you click on to join in.Simple instruction will sent with link. Our speakers will be talking to us from across North America. All four Speakers that we had lined up for the conference were excited that we did not cancel and have confirmed that they will take part on May 23.

If you have a minute why not register now on this link

Reminder.....

Encourage and share this note with your exchange students,Rotoactors and Interactors  to sign up at no cost to them

Check out our Conference web site to see the agenda plans for  May 23/20

Note- Normally we would use the talents of  Sargent at Arms Jerry Belanger and Patrick Brett to raise some funds for the chosen charity.  This year a small portion of the registration fee will be given to Nutrition on Weekends (NOW) program of Kenora. This program feeds less fortunate Kenora area students over the weekends.

Thank you Rotarians for the good work that each of you does in your communities.
