Highlights of the February 24 Rotary Club Meeting
President Sharon thanked all of the members who had attended the unveiling of the Echocardiogram machine at the Selkirk and District Regional Hospital on February 14. She thanked the fund raising committee as without Rotarians Jean, Gayle and Ruth the project would not have been completed. It was begun in 2016 and we raised over $200 000.
The Regional Comprehensive students who are forming an Interact Club are very busy. Avery and Kya are attending the Leadership Training workshops in Russell February 13 to 15. They also plan to hold a fundraising table tennis competition over several lunch hours. We sponsored the tournament by providing $75 for the prizes.
Today, Rotarian Jean and President Sharon presented monetary prizes to the adult writers who participated in the Community Writing Contest. The three top prize winners, Ruth Christie, John Henderson and Mary Hnatuik read their poems and a short story.
Rotarian Lesli read out the name of the student who was awarded the Humboldt Strong Scholarship. One criteria is that the student who receives it must be currently playing on the Humbold Broncos hockey team.
She also let us know that she is looking into a trip prize for Lobsterfest.
Rotarian Jean reported on the Echo windup and the conditions the club has specified in order to work with the Interlake Art Board’s mural project that will be painted on the south side of Packers. Rotarian Fraser has volunteered to verify the historical content of the mural.
Rotarian Elaine informed us that the Australian Friendship Exchange will not be held this summer. There was too small a group who were still committed to participate.
Rotarian Brian introduced our guest speaker tonight, MLA Dr. Lagimodiere. He presented a very comprehensive report of information about problem areas inherited from the previous government. He filled us in on the current government’s plans to improve those areas and told us where the province stands today.
Rotarian Brian thanked him for his informative talk and for him and his wife attending our meeting.
