Introduction to New Member Trish Goosen

It is an honour to introduce myself as a new member of Rotary and I am excited to be a part of this worldwide community.  My passion for building and maintaining relationships and supporting the success of all students has been shaped over the past 24 years as an educator in the Lord Selkirk School Division.  I have taught at 3 different elementary schools, including on a Hutterite colony. My passion for mathematics led me to serve as lead teacher for LSSD for over 4 years.  My administrative career began in February 2016 and I am now principal at Happy Thought School.
Having grown up in Selkirk and now living in East Selkirk, I understand and value the connections a small community has to offer.  My husband, Andrew, who teaches the electrical program at the Comp, and I have been married for 22 years.  We have two children, Carter, 20, and Victoria, who is 17 and will be graduating grade 12 in June 2021.
Some of my interests and hobbies include cooking and baking, reading, and walking our dog, Murphy.

John is married with two teenage children. His wife Elsie is a nurse practitioner with a Phd in nursing currently employed by the University of Manitoba. Elsie also maintains her clinical practice with the IERHA and contract virtual care in Manitoba and Ontario

John joined the RCMP in 1990 after completing a Bachelor of Science degree at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and has been stationed throughout Manitoba. In 2008 he was commissioned to the rank of Inspector and transferred to London Ontario. John returned to Manitoba in 2011 to Thompson, to Selkirk in 2014 and promoted to Superintendent in 2015. He retired from the RCMP in 2018, taking the job of Director of Protective Services with the City of Selkirk where he worked until February 2020. John returned to the RCMP as the Officer in Charge of Selkirk Detachment, where he continued with his passion of detachment and community policing.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEPTEMBER 28 MEETING

President Jean called the meeting to order and introduced Rotarian Michele who taught us some Zoom etiquette. Then Jean continued our review of the Avenues of Service by summarizing the 4th Avenue of International Service and its purpose of advancing international understanding and peace. The Ripple Effect projects are an example of this service. Our current Director of this Avenue is Rotarian Elaine Elliott.

Jean then welcomed the Assistant District Governor, Rob Tisdale, to our meeting.

NOW (Nutrition On the Weekends) Project

President Jean reported the four schools that participated last year were all sent information letters.

To date we have not heard back from them all. We are ready to go once the schools are prepared.

World Polio Day

October 24 has been identified as World Polio Day. President Jean has sent an article to The Record Highlighting the importance of the day and how Rotary has been working to eradicate this disease.

Past District Governor Pat Chernesky has suggested that each Rotarian donate $20.20 (the year 2020) to Polio Plus. Treasurer Lesli Malegus will accept donations.

Whine Wine

It was decided that a new fundraiser should be tried and funds raised go to support the Food Bank and the NOW (Nutrition On the Weekend) program. The idea is that each Rotarian donate one or two bottles of wine. Raffle tickets will be sold and prizes will be bottles of wine. Rotarian Jean is looking after working with Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries to get us started.

Guest: Assistant Governor Rob Tisdale

Rotarian Rob Tisdale joined Rotary in 1987 and this is the second time he has held the Assistant Governor position.

In 1996-97 he was the President of the Winnipeg Rotary Club and has held other chair positions. Over the years he has worked mainly with Youth. He believes that one of the powers of Zoom and other social media platforms is how easy it connects us to the rest of the world. He encouraged us to be creative in our use of technology to bring people together on an equal basis. He is very available to members for assistance and advice.

And more …

Rotarians David and Michele are working on creating a more relevant and robust social media presence on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Rotarians Michele and Trish will be working together on all of the Youth programs and the Interact group as soon as COVID-19 restrictions allow.

Rotarians Jean and Sharon will resume work archiving the TD bank materials next week at the earliest. Depending on the quantity of materials we may need some assistance.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the Vocational Award and the Red Bomb Tour are on hold.
