ANNOUNCEMENTSHonouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) will once again see our club connect with Chemawawin Cree Nation by sending school supplies and bedding. We are asking Rotarians to donate school supplies (scribblers, loose leaf, pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, pencil cases, backpacks, etc). Drop them off at Jean’s, or Sharons, or Lesli’s by September 15th so we can send them up soon after school starts. They have also expressed a need for bedding (sheets, blankets, comforters)..which can be an ongoing project as we did last fall. Our Garden Project - On August 15, 56.9 pounds of vegetables were delivered to the Selkirk Food Bank (onions, cucumbers, beets).
- On August 17, 27 pounds of beets, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes and beans were delivered to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.
- If you can help. Corn is still growing, more beets coming, zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes...if you can help pick produce in the next couple of weeks, let David or Jean know.
EXCERPTS FROM LAST MEETINGProgram: 1000 Survival Gardens in South Africa Our club welcomed guests:
Rob Campbell and Brigette Turner from Hillcrest Rotary Club of Durban South Africa Gary Dawyduk from the Rotary Club of Winnipeg Ken and Donna Krebs from the Rotary Club of Gimli Sara Johnston, potential member
It was 1:00 a.m. tomorrow in South Africa when we were blessed to have two Rotarians from the Hillcrest Durban South Africa share information regarding the Survival Gardens and Hippo Rollers. Gary Dawyduk, of Winnipeg, provided information, pictures, and video to share information regarding access to water, food security, sustainability, and independence through the Survival Garden project. Rob and Brigette shared that empowering the women is essential to building community and are central to this project. About Hippo Rollers and the 1000 Survival Gardens project: Kit includes ($250 Canadian) – Hippo Water roller, shovel, rake, hoe, watering can, seeds and seedlings, compost, fertilizer, guide for growing, soap & sanitizer, face masks.
Empowering women and the use of Hippo Water rollers will enable younger girls to attend school vs staying home to haul water. Hippo Rollers are durable and have a life span of approximately seven years. They are designed and manufactured in South Africa. Our club has budgeted to support four kits ($1000). Individual donations are charitable donations and receipts will be issued. Rotary Club of Winnipeg will match all donations.
Sergeant at Arms, Rhonda's challenge for the meeting was to guess “Who is this Rotarian?” She gave several clues, and many guessed "Rotarian Michele". President Dave's report included the following: History of Rotary Lake is being confirmed by Rotarians Fraser and Sharon. Rotary Garden for Selkirk Food Band and Soup Kitchen is being cared for by regular volunteers. With our hybrid meeting schedule our next meeting will be in person at the Marine Museum.
HIP: Rotarian Trish Goosen spearheaded the drive of donations to help families and children that have been displaced due to the fires in northern Manitoba. She is now getting ready to take in a second run of donations into Winnipeg. Thank you Trish!
