HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OCTOBER 26 ZOOM MEETING

President Jean opened the meeting at 6:00 by explaining the origin and meaning of the Rotary Wheel.

The founders of Rotary chose a wheel as their emblem. They did not choose a rubber- tired wheel, for Rotary carries no passengers. They choose instead a powerful gear-wheel with teeth designed for heavy duty.

The teeth of Rotary are the members of Rotary. They do their work, intermeshed with other members. If one tooth is broken or absent, the work of the wheel is impaired or stopped. The teeth are bound solidly together by the rim which is the Club.

The spokes of the wheel are the meetings of the Club. At regular intervals, they impart to the members the inspiring , and restless drive of the central shaft, the spirit of Rotarians throughout the world.

President Jean introduced our Guest Speaker, District Governor Gailmarie Anderson and the Assistant District Governor, Rob Tisdale.

She also reported that:

  • About 70 students from 5 schools will be participating in the NOW program. If you are interested in helping, please let Jean know. The first delivery will be November 6. NOW is Nutrition On Weekends.

  • Several Rotarians have voiced concerns over the worn appearance of the Rotary Shelter in Selkirk Park. Brady Clark, Director of Recreation for the city of Selkirk says it is too late in the season to do anything about it. We will pursue this idea in the spring.

  • President Jean asked for feedback from the members who participated in the Summer Park Clean UP. There was a brief discussion as to whether or not we should continue as very few people seem to be using the smaller parks.

Since the meeting The “Viva la Vino” books of tickets have been distributed and are selling quickly. If you have books or partial books you have not been able to sell please contact Jean for ticket redistribution. Some master ticket sellers have sold their tickets and have a waiting list to fill.

Secretary Ruth Konzelman presented two requests for support from our club.

  • The STARS Ambulance request will be revisited in the new year perhaps as a program presentation.

  • The Rotary Club of Winnipeg’s request for the “1000 Survival Gardens” was deferred until information was available on the $500 grant our club pledged to the Rotary Club of Winnipeg for its abused women’s project in Nepal. Since the Board meeting we have confirmed that the Nepal project is going ahead so the directors feel International Service is well supported at this time.

Treasurer Lesli Malegus moved the Rotary Club of Selkirk and the Fundraising Budget be approved as circulated for 2020-2021. Seconded by Rotarian Rhonda Grobowski. CARRIED

Director Brian Surridge reported that the tour of Red Bomb would be organized once Covid-19 restrictions lessened. The Vocational Award will be presented at the December 7 Zoom meeting. Brian is setting up the recipient ‘s presence online. The December 14 Christmas Party is on hold.

Directors David Thorne and Michele Polinuk have concluded 3 meetings with the RM’s and City of Selkirk. All of the future product ideas gained from these meetings will be recorded in a Power Point to be presented to the membership. Also, all of the social media Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are now working.

Director Michele reported that the school programs are all on hold as the school community is too overwhelmed dealing with Covid restrictions.

Program Topic: A visit from the District Governor, Gailmarie Anderson

(Posted by Secretary Ruth Konzelman)

District Governor Gailmarie Anderson reminded us that In a normal year, the District Governor tries to meet in person with every club in the District. This year with Covid restrictions, Gailmarie is doing her visits by Zoom.  She said it is hard to keep members engaged on Zoom when a large part of Rotary is fellowship. To hold our attention, she did a Power Point presentation.

Rotary International President Holger Knaack has declared year 2020-2021 as

“Rotary Opens Opportunities”. Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone.

Rotary International Action Plan:

  • increase our impact

  • expand our reach

  • increase our ability to adapt

  • enhance participant engagement

To implement this action plan:

  • new and innovative club models such as e-clubs

  • more women in leadership roles

  • emphasis on youth involvement

  • every club must have a strategic plan

  • no wrong age to join Rotary

  • grow membership, new members join because they fit our club

  • dare to change.

As we invent HOW we do things in Rotary we must not forget WHY we are doing things, to grow members, retain members and involve members.

“Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves”

                                         Holger Knaack RI President 2020-2021

A brief discussion took place around why individual members joined Rotary.

David thanked Gailmarie for joining our meeting tonight.

The meeting adjourned at 7:08.
