Highlights of the January 11, ZOOM Meeting

Posted by Secretary Ruth Konzelman

President Jean called the meeting to order and led us as we recited the 4 Way Test. She then introduced our speaker, Joan English of the Interlake Art Board and Ron Theide, a prospective member.

President Jean reported that just prior to the Christmas holidays 64 double bags were filled for the Nutrition On Weekends (NOW) program. This past Friday it was 80 bags. Diane Thomas from the Selkirk Golf Course has been a tremendous help to Rotary by picking up fresh fruit and other snacks for the bags at the wholesaler she deals with in Winnipeg.

Honouring Indigenous People (HIP) initiative of the club will be making a final donation of bedding, blankets and winter clothes to Easterville and Moose Lake this coming week. If any Rotarian has a donation to make please give Jean a call.

Jean had an interesting email this week from the Rotary Club of Melrose, Scotland. It was incorrectly sent to our Club instead of the Rotary Club of Selkirk, Scotland. It led to an interesting exchange with the writer of the email, Wilson MacKay. He told Jean about his club and the COVID effect and their project to deliver a box of toiletries to a local hospital every week. He asked Jean to keep in touch. This is to be discussed at the next executive meeting.

President-elect and Media:

President-elect David reported he had also had a conversation with the Rotary Club of Selkirk, Scotland this past week and suggested a possible Zoom meeting between our clubs. There is a 6 hr. time difference which would have to be taken into consideration.

David also requested photos of the next NOW assembly line for Facebook as well as photos loading the car with our donations for Easterville. 6900 people saw the draw for Viva la Vino but by far the most popular post has been the vintage Selkirk Pool pictures.

The object will be to discuss the new relationship between Rotary and Toastmasters. The Feb.8th meeting will have a presentation on the new displays at the Marine Museum presented by Rotarian Fraser Stewart and David MacInnes. Brian is looking for topics for meeting presentations after Feb.8/21. Anyone with ideas please contact him. Jean thanked Brian for all his hard work putting these presentations together.

Sgt. At Arms:

Rotarian Rhonda had a challenging game of questions for us pulled from Trivial Pursuit Genius Edition. Apparently, none of us are of the genius caliber as no winner was declared.

Introduction of the Guest Speaker:

Incoming president David Thorne introduced Joanie English who was the first director of nursing at Red River Place, then a longtime proprietor of the Petersfield General Store before becoming a founding member of the Interlake Art Board.

Interlake Juried Art Show Facebook page

In 2013 a small group of artists became concerned that the Interlake Juried Art Show no longer had an active working group to support it. A need was also seen for a better working relationship between the various art groups and new equipment was needed along with a manual to continue future Juried Art Shows. A working group of three individuals was successful with a grant application to the provincial government Community Places for grids, backdrops and display stands. This equipment was shared between 3 arts groups, Gimli, Teulon and the Selkirk Community Art Centre. In 2017 when a grant became available for a mural project it was decided to pursue this avenue and incorporate the Interlake Community Art Board. Since then, the Interlake Art Board has established the Selkirk Mural and Public Art Project and cohosted the Juried Art Show along with the Selkirk Community Arts Centre. In October 2021, the Juried Art Show expects to have over 100 artists and close to 250 pieces of art.

The mandate of the Interlake Art Board is to strengthen our communities by promoting the arts and teaching arts to the general public through our murals and public art projects. This will advance education and the public’s appreciation of the arts. Joanie said “murals help lead to positive community norms such as diversity, tolerance and free expression and since art requires no language skills these areas provide individuals & newcomers a sense of unity.”

In 2014 the group brought Selkirk born and educated Charlie Johnson on board as the curator of Selkirk Public Art Murals. There are three basic themes to the murals: commemorative or tribute murals, community spirit murals and endangered species murals. More than a dozen murals adorn the walls of Selkirk buildings with another four murals in the planning stage. A “ Safe at Home” Manitoba Grant is helping to sponsor a contest for “endangered species” murals consisting of Smoking Fish on Danny Thor’s wall and a 3D Painted Turtle Shell.

Joanie says opportunities exist for Rotary to support the Interlake Art Board as Patrons of the Art for $500 per year. One of the things the patrons support is art classes for youth. These classes are creative activities for creative minds and help to instill lasting change in the participants.

Marcia thanked Joanie for her informative presentation.

Before adjourning the meeting, President Jean asked Rotarians to put their thinking caps on for ideas for a COVID safe Lobsterfest. The executive will be discussing this at next Monday’s meeting. Rotarian Sharon said Lee should be invited to attend as he has experience with Gordon Howard’s take-out dinners.

And more from your Board…

Item #1- LOBSTERFEST: We need to look at our major fundraiser and see how we can adapt it for COVID times. Lee Hanson was invited to speak to Gordon Howard’s fundraising Thanksgiving and Christmas take- out dinners. They sold 180 tickets and could have sold 250. Elaine spoke about Gimli’s cold lobster sale and Rhonda talked about another club’s drive by meal which included a major donation to Rotary. It was decided to hold it on the last Saturday in May(29th ) with the format to be discussed at the next Rotary Zoom meeting on Jan. 25th .

Item #2-NOW: Our Club must spend the Rotary Grant first and then work on the SDCF. $10,000 grant. We need to do some bulk buying to reach the required dollar amount to submit to Rotary. Bags will be filled this Thursday instead of Friday and the number of required bags is increasing daily. Jean expects it to be over 90 this week. There has been a request for toothbrushes, toothpaste and hand sanitizer which we are looking into supplying.

Item #3- EXECUTIVE for 2021-2022: Jean is working at filling a slate of officers to be nominated for the upcoming year. It is still a work in progress.
