Highlights of the January 25, ZOOM Meeting

President Jean called the meeting to order by sharing the Selkirk Rotary Club history posted in the “From the Archives” column. She then welcomed:

  • From Toastmasters: David Storey, past president of the Selkirk Club and District Director. Alfred Kerperin, Michael Bayer & Laverne Wojciechowski all from the District 64 Executive.
  • Rotary Guests: Ron Thiede and Shauna Curtin (SDCF board member)

Introduction of Guest Speakers: Rotarian Brian said when he called the local Toastmaster’s number to arrange this meeting David Storey answered the phone and quickly arranged to have the district Toastmaster’s executive team attend as well.

District 64 Director, Laverne Wojciechowski started the presentation saying there is a great deal of common ground between Toastmasters and Rotary. They are both non-profit organizations, with a long history, membership with a global reach and both developed to help people. Toastmaster members attend meetings where they learn to enhance listening skills, conduct effective meetings, take and implement feedback skills in order to create confident speakers, communicators and leaders who can positively impact communities around the world.

Toastmaster’s educational program is called “Pathways” and is developed around five core competencies. They are: public speaking, interpersonal communication, leading and managing, leading strategically and building confidence. There are eleven possible paths for learning such as dynamic leadership, engaging humor, persuasive influence and strategic relationships. Each of these eleven paths have 5 levels of competency with increasing complexity and are composed of core competencies. The program has been expanded to offer new technological resources to improve speeches and support meeting roles, mobile access to educational materials on smart phones and tablets and expanded video and digital content to facilitate learning. Members can work on projects at their own pace.

During the question-and-answer period we learned that locally, Toastmasters offers a several week speech craft program as well as leadership development programs that are open to groups other than Toastmaster members. Although members must be 18 years of age to join Toastmasters they have provided a leadership program to 4H Clubs. David Storey said he had wondered why there was an affiliation between Rotary and Toastmasters and he was told that Ralph C. Smedley, the founder of Toastmasters, was both a member of Rotary and Toastmasters.

Ron Knight thanked them for joining our meeting on Zoom and providing some interesting information.

Sergeant at Arms Rhonda provided us with another challenging quiz. The winner squeaked in with 50% so Rhonda has promised to restore our confidence with easier trivia next meeting.

President’s Report & Announcements: President Jean reported that the NOW volunteers filled 95 bags of snacks on Jan.21 and this coming Friday there will be at least 96 bags filled. Plans are underway to do a major purchase of bulk food so that we can reach $5000 in invoices to submit for the RI grant.

Honouring Indigenous People (HIP) initiative of the club will be making a final donation of bedding, blankets and winter clothes to Easterville and Moose Lake this coming week.

Jean and Sharon, who have overseen the archives, are looking for opinions on what should be done with 2 large Rotary scrapbooks. They are a work of art but there is no place to store them. Do we take the pictures out and file the articles? Store the books in the trailer? Fraser said some of the photos had been digitized and if articles were filed they should be indexed. The consensus was that the pictures should be removed from the album, digitized and then filed.

Lobsterfest: Jean reported on the discussion coming out of the executive meeting concerning our major fundraiser. Our Club needs to have a major fundraiser and it is unlikely that there will be any large gatherings in May. A lobster dinner in a box to go, held on the last Saturday in May was the favourite idea. The dinner would consist of a potato, portion container of cold slaw, butter, sour cream and lobster(s). Instructions on how to cook the meal would be included and steaks would be available for those that do not want lobster. Gordon Howard has been booked for May 28 & May 29th. Their kitchen can be used and the banquet room for safe distancing and assembly of the meals.

Lesli contacted the lobster supplier to check costs and freight. FED EX seems to be running smoothly. A 1 ½ lb lobster Club cost is $27 and 2 lobster about $48. Discussion took place about selling only cold lobster and not the dinner. The consensus was for the lobster in a box dinner and possibly selling lobster only in the Fall /winter season. Further discussion took place regarding serving only 1 lobster instead of two, opening ticket sales up, advertising it, possible use of e-transfer for tickets, a prize attached to the tickets, and a tax receipt.

Lesli and Rhonda have agreed to continue as co-chairs of Lobsterfest. They will carry on with planning and a further Club meeting will be held to refine the new form of this fundraiser.
