Highlights of the February 22nd ZOOM Meeting Posted by Secretary Ruth Konzelman Jean opened the meeting informing the members that she and Rotarians Michele and Sharon had attended an online HIP (Honouring Indigenous Peoples) Workshop. A topic discussed was the Land Acknowledgement statement and the purpose it serves. Rotarian Sharon then read an article, from the Manitoba Law Library, to summarize the information that was presented. Traditional Land Acknowledgements: More than Just a Gesture
Read the article at: https://lawlibrary.ca/2018/08/30/traditional-land-acknowledgements-more-than-just-a-gesture/ During COVID the usual grace and toast has been replaced by a trip down memory lane or a dive into the archives. This week Jean remined us of what our Rotary Club was up to in 1987. The Club had fun cleaning up the Selkirk dock, apparently sponsored the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s performance in Selkirk, supported Ethiopian Famine Relief, participated in a street carnival, built and maintained a toboggan slide at Daerwood Park as well as a warming hut. Introduction of visiting Rotarians, Visitors and Guests: Rotary Guests: Ron Thiede and Caroline Bidal Sergeant at Arms and quizmaster Rhonda had another challenge for us this week. She maintains the quiz was easier but most of us prefer to think we are getting sharper with these questions. Several Rotarians tied for the prize which remains a big secret. President’s Report & Announcements: President Jean again asked any members that may have donated to the Rotary Foundation online to let Treasurer Lesli know so she can double check the total donated by members. Donations were to be marked “Annual Giving”. There has been a request by District 5550 for the names of any Club members deceased in the last Rotary year (July /20 -21) so they can be remembered during the memorial service at the District Conference in May. We cannot think of any but let Jean know if there is a member we may have missed. Induction of New Member Ron Thiede: Jean called upon the Club Directors to participate in the Induction of New Member Ceremony after which Club members raised a glass in toast to our newest member Ron Thiede. Congratulations Ron we look forward to getting to know you as we work together for the Good of Rotary. Lobster on the Run: Jean then called on the lobster fundraiser’s co-chairs to give the Club an update on planning. Lesli and Rhonda with the Club’s approval will call the event, “Lobster on the Run”. Lesli provided the following information : There will be 750 tickets printed at $60 each. The costs will be roughly $28.75 with a $25 tax receipt and will include one entry per ticket for the Grand prize. The grand prize will have a value of about $750. The ticket cost allows for fluctuations in shipping costs, lobster and steak costs and incidentals such as a donation to Gordon Howard Centre for use of the facility. Carrot cake is the dessert of choice as it keeps well and is not too fragile. The duties of various club members were discussed. Michele, Sharon, and Ruth will look after finding a grand prize or perhaps a choice of grand prizes for the winner. David T and Ron K will look after dinner tickets, both online sales and individual ticket sales. David T will look after signage for the parking lot as well as traffic flow for dinner pick up. Lesli and Rhonda will walk through Gordon Howard to check out the kitchen facilities and refine the plan. Marcia is to get lobster cooking instructions from Gimli Rotarian Ken Krebs. These instructions will be included in the bags along with the cold lobster. Discussion took place on perhaps inviting STARS personnel to help with traffic to boost their visibility prior to a possible Fall fundraiser with them. Michele will wear the traditional lobster costume again. Discussion took place about an additional 50/50 ticket sale and looking for a Rotarian to organize this. If everything falls into place as planned the final Lobster on the Run organizational meeting for the Club will be May 17.

This $500 was already in the approved Club 2020-2021 budget. To date $4,000. has been spent on the NOW program. 4th Avenue or International Service: Director Elaine Elliott reminded everyone to give to the RI Foundation if our club wants to be eligible to receive grants in return.
