    PRESIDENT JEAN’S THOUGHTS:

As the term as president comes to an end, there are many people who need to be thanked. First must go to your Executive for without their support this past year our club would not have been able to sustain our membership in Rotary International. Secretary Ruth and Treasurer Lesli thank you for keeping us informed about meetings, business and financial affairs; Sargent at Arms Rhonda.. The Quiz and Trivia you shared has truly shed a bit of humor at our meetings and certainly reminded me of how little I know or how much I have forgotten!!. Thank you to Elaine whose past knowledge of our club has always been helpful; Ron for once again single handedly looking after Vocational Awards; Past President Michele who always keeps me on my toes and never afraid to ask Why? Unfortunately your term as Director of Youth had to be put on hold this year, but you stepped up in so many other ways. Past President Sharon thank you for all your support in reminding me of items to be done, helping with NOW and working with Hobie to provide us with a Spoke that has really kept us all in the loop. No easy task!

And Special Thanks must be given to Director of Club Service Brian...your diligence in coming up with speakers for every meeting was truly a feat and it is with that attentiveness that our Zoom meetings went from about 20% early on to 60 to 80% as we got closer to June. The programs you provided were outstanding and we all thank you for that. Incoming President David, making our Club’s presence known on social media has brought in new members and kept the name of Rotary in the forefront of our community. I know that the members of our club will give you full support this year. To our new members, Caroline, Trish, Shawna and Ron...thank you for becoming members of what I truly believe is the best organization in the world.

To all the members of Selkirk Rotary, thank you for your continued support. This is never how we would have imagined our existence as a club could be. Zoom may be here for a while and you all proved that it does work and is one way we can keep in touch and is the next best thing to meeting in person. For without it, how could we have carried on? It has been an honour to serve as your President and I thank you for giving me the opportunity.

    Jean

Highlights of the June 14, 2021 Zoom Meeting

Call to Order: 6:00 p.m. by President Jean Oliver

    Acknowledgement of Treaty Land Territory

Program: Review of “Lobster on the Run”

Welcome to all. David Thorne introduced guest Norm Bidal, husband of recent member Caroline Bidal.

Sergeant at Arms: Rhonda fined everyone today $5 and indicated that there is currently $813 collected to date for the year. No quiz or trivia tonight, but rather some “knee slapping” jokes and some “groaners.”

Rhonda indicated that it was recently her 50th Birthday and that Lee shares the same date (but not the same year….)

President’s Report: Jean shared some trivia from Lobsterfests of the past…. Back in the days when lobster was $5.95 lb and shipping was $602…Ah those were the days!

Lobster on the Run: Our two amazing co-chairs Rhonda and Lesli, along with leaders David and Trish, shared information from the Lobster on the Run event:

    • Went well, no complaints, not too bad for a first-time attempt!

    • Less work as a whole, less labour intensive, less cleaning up, home just after 6 p.m.

    • Thanks to everyone who took part – that’s why it was so successful, it was done as a “whole team effort” with passion

    • Immensely proud of Rotary Team

    • Thanks to Gordon Howard – the building was perfect, a donation was given

    • Thanks to Grad students who were the runners, a donation was given

    • Outstanding invoice is the permit to close down the road by the waterfront. We should realize a profit of $18,000.00. This is less than what we usually would make.

      Download the report PDF

    • All buns were donated by Upper Crust and they baked all the potatoes

    • 50/50 went smooth. Winner was Garth Clemons.

    • Grand Prize winner was Bill Bodman – prize selected was the $750 Biz Bucks

    • Might consider this again…..Stay tuned…. Come to meetings as we plan ideas for next year!

HUGE Thank you to Lesli and Rhonda for the many hours spent organizing and going over all the details to ensure a successful event!

Action: Acting secretary, Michele, will send thank you notes/cards to Upper Crust, and Diane Thomas from the Selkirk Golf Course (she purchased 90% of the supplies for NOW throughout the year, as well as for Lobster on the Run)

President Jean concluded this portion of the program by giving thanks to everyone!

    Directors Reports

Past President – Sharon shared that the NOW program has two weeks remaining before children break for the summer. Thanks to the volunteers and friends of Rotary who helped. The program was never short of volunteers.

President Elect – David reported that there were two social media posts – Lobster on the Run and the Book delivery.

Secretary’s Report- Acting secretary Michele shared correspondence from Shelter Box. The letter indicated that this July we will receive a Bronze Hero Award in recognition of our support to see a world where no family goes without shelter after a disaster. As a club, we recently donated $1200.00.

Treasurer’s Report- Lesli indicated that invoices will be coming out soon for your Rotary Membership dues and will be payable by the end of July.

Program- Last program of “this year” for Rotary is June 28 when some of the roles change in Rotary……Be there to find who will be doing what…..

    Reminders:

    • Director meeting June 21st at 5:00 p.m. by Zoom

    • Any bills… get in by the end of the month to Lesli
