PETS Report 2019 PETS was held March 15-17 in Russell Manitoba. I found all of the sessions and speakers very worthwhile and helpful, perhaps because I have had a few months as president and know what aspects of the position that the club and I are finding challenging. The weekend started, Friday evening with a video called “Making Sense” which showed how a symphony conductor uses the symphony dynamics to teach business executives how to build a functional team. As I remember the steps were: - Tune up. Discuss beforehand what you are trying to play or do and make sure everyone is on the same page.
- Let all related groups know what is happening. The stronger and the weaker players need to play together in order to have the best sound possible.
- Make sure you are not micro managing all of the sections or groups. The leaders in each must be allowed to have ownership.
- Be specific with your expectations. Make sure everyone can see the end goal.
Between this video and the pre PETS homework assignments focusing on leadership styles and the Club Health Check I was able to more clearly see the culture of our club, our needs as individual members and the need for a plan of succession. We did have quite a lot of time to interact and share ideas in these areas. We talked about Club culture and one of the quotes I liked was “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” In describing an ideal club culture some of the characteristics were: - mission clarity
- membership commitment
- strong trust
- highly effective leadership
- performance based programs
- a high degree of adaptability
- high accountability standards
- support for innovation
- customer focused to serve our local community
- utilize many means of communication
- emphasize recruiting and retention
- accept and involve new members
- find out what all members are interested in
Some of the other sessions were on membership, recruiting and retention, sustainable club projects, online resources and how to use them, as well as club risk management. If you would like to read more about the weekend most of the session materials are online at |
